Limerick Competition

Limerick writers have spent some time in the last month cooking up limericks about Cambridge and autumn for the Cambridge Autumn Festival's Limerick Competition 2012. It's the first year the Autumn Festival has run the competition and they were delighted with the response from the Cambridge public. Prizes were kindly sponsored by New World Cambridge.

Public Competition:

Winners of the Public Competition won a $50 New World Cambridge voucher.

There once was a bridge above the river
that made every motorist quiver
Woe to us all
if she ever does fall
but even fish, I suppose need their dinner
By Rochelle Johnson (also People's Choice Winner)

The Autumn's a colourful treat
With the thousands of leaves at your feet
Raking up is a chore
Not to mention a bore
When the wind blows them back in a beat!
By Judy Aldridge (also People's Choice Winner)

Said the Oak to the Elm, "Autumn's here."
Sighed the Elm, "It's that time of the year.
In a southerly wind,
of our leaves we'll be skinned,
We'll look rather ragged, I fear!"
By Stuart Millar

Our forefathers knelt on their knees
Planting acorns instead of green peas
And because of these folk
Who nurtured each oak
We love Cambridge, our home – Town of Trees
By Robina Cummins

A rower in Cambridge to race
Found he couldn't keep up with the pace
By catching a crab
He strained his left ab
And ended the race in last place
By Ray Milner

There once was a town that bred horses
that week after week ran on courses
While the punters had fun
lots of money was won
and the town could improve its resources
By Rhonda Badger

There once was a colt named Zabeel
A champion horse, that's for real
Cambridge breeds success
And sporting prowess
And a pride in our town that we feel
By Alan Pencavel

Autumn has made the fruit swell
An apple hit me as it fell
It bumped my poor head
Never mind, I'm well fed.
For I ate it. And 10 more as well
By Rebecca Leys

Business Competition:

The winner of the Business Competition, who won a case of wine sponsored by New World Cambridge, was Supa Clean with their winning limerick….

An old couple visited Cambridge one Autumn
They liked some books in Wrights' so they bought 'em
They stopped at Fran's
Ate two of her flans
Forgot to pay… but nobody caught 'em!
